How to get to Agiasmata
From the central square of the city of Chios take the road to Volissos. The route includes the driving through the winding road of mt. Epos (altitude 372 m.), during which you can enjoy the stunning views of the city of Chios and the sea.
Arriving in Volissos you have the option to drive into the village for a coffee break or skip it and continue to Agiasmata.
Both during the climb and when descending the mountain of Amani you will encounter several villages. Especially those of the valley of Agiasmata will leave you with the impression that they are literally "hanging" from the slopes.
The route follows the upward course of the winding road of the Amani mountain (elevation approx. 800 meters), the mountain of northern Chios. While descending into the valley of Agiasmata you will suddenly find yourself in a totally different character of nature. You will be impressed by the rich vegetation of forests and crops on slopes in contrast with the dryness of the previous landscape.
A characteristic of these villages is that they cannot be seen from the sea. The reason is that their founders wanted them to be out of sight of the pirates in the old times that sailed in the area looking for booty.
At the beginning of the valley you will come accross the ruins of the installations of an antimony mine that was active up until ..... Continuing the road parallel to the river Arbanos, the small stream that crosses the valley, you will arrive at the seaside where the village of Agiasmata is situated.
